Billy Helmers
Billy Helmers was born in 1970 in
the small west Texas town of Pecos. After graduating
from Monahans High School in 1989 he joined the United
States Navy. While in boot camp he learned about many
programs in the Navy, but the one that sparked the most
interest was Basic Underwater Demolition School, commonly
referred to as BUD/s. Always looking for a challenge
he volunteered for BUD/s after boot camp. After 10 months
of pain Billy graduated from class 175, where only 19
of 120 men crossed the finish line, with a new sense
of accomplishment he went to SEAL TEAM 5 located in
Coronado, CA.
During his 8 years at SEAL TEAM 5 he completed 4 overseas
deployments, and then worked as a training instructor
for 18 months teaching SEAL/s advanced land warfare
tactics, explosives, marksmanship and close quarters
combat. He was then selected for assignment to the United
States Navy Parachute Team, the “Leap Frogs”.
Throughout his 3 year tour he performed in over 70 cities
for over 15 million spectators. Although he enjoyed
his time on the Leap Frogs, September 11th had struck
and reminded him of his sworn oath of duty. Now his
main priority was getting back to a SEAL TEAM so that
he could deploy and join the fight in the Middle East
to win the Global War on Terror.
He received orders to SEAL TEAM 7, where he made 2 more
deployments. One of which, he was a Tactical Vehicle
Navigator for over 60 Direct Action missions to capture/kill
terrorist after which he was awarded a Navy Commendation
Medal with combat “V” for valor, and the
following deployment was as the Chief of his platoon
where he directly led 16 men during one of the nations
highest priority missions that resulted in him being
awarded the Bronze Star with combat “V”
for valor.
He is currently assigned, once again, to BUD/s …
however he is no longer a student but an instructor.
He instructs future SEAL TEAM members in Underwater
Combat Swimmer techniques. Billy and his absolutely
amazing, beautiful wife of 15 years, Lisa, reside in
Imperial Beach, CA. and have a son, Hagen who is 7 and
their daughter Paige who is 4.
